When hip hop started out, there were not many options for women as far as hip hop clothing was concerned. The main option was to dress like a man with girl jewelry. Over the last 15 years this has changed dramatically. This sense of style for women became much more feminine, and many new options arose.
Today women's hip hop clothing is very distinct from men's. A full range of styles are available, including pants, skirts, dresses, shoes and bags, as well as makeup and fragrances. There are even designers that makes this style of clothes ONLY for women.
Some hip labels design exclusively for women, others have women's and men's lines, these are the major players:
House of Dereon- Is run by Beyonce Knowles, her sister, Solange, and mother, Tina. It was named after Beyonce's grandmother. This line is meant to be enhancing to a woman's curves. Dereon's looks also range from casual to formal.
Fetish (by Eve)- Is another important women's hip hop designer. Fetish specializes in cool, sporty, biker-ish looks exclusively for women. One can only think came from her Ruff Ryder background. Eve's look uses a lot of black and is very flattering to most body types.
Baby Phat- Is designed by rocker mogul Russell Simmons' ex-wife, Kimora Lee Simmons. Kimora has it all, from sweats and nighties, to formal looks in both juniors and plus sizes, as well as girls'. She also has shoes, accessories, makeup and fragrance, making Baby Phat a one stop hip hop shop.
Apple Bottoms- Also caters to women with curves. Apple Bottoms is owned and run by the rapper, Nelly. Sporty, casual and formal looks abound. Nelly has also provided shoes and accessories with the lady in mind.
J-Lo- Jennifer Lopez actually has more than one clothing line. One is called J Lo and is more casual and all-inclusive, and the other is new for dressier looks and is called SweetFace.
Rocawear- has both men's and women's lines. This line for women is all inclusive as well and provides just about everything the hip hop diva could want. There are options for women in regular and plus sizes, as well as girls. It is owned and operated by hip hop artist and producer extraordinaire, Jay-Z. He knows the music, and now the clothes.
G-Unit-also has some women's things in conjunction with the men's line, but it is mostly jeans and tees, albeit fabulous jeans and tees.
So many choices and these are JUST the labels run by hip hop artist/producers themselves. With so many lines to choose from, you should have no problem finding the perfect outfit for your style AND your curves, something that has been practically unheard of until now.
